Corinth in many ways was the chief city of Greece. It was located just off the Corinthian isthmus, and it was a crossroads for travelers and traders. Characterized by typical Greek culture, its people were interested in Greek philosophy and placed a high premium on wisdom.
Corinth contained at least 12 temples. It is not known for certain whether they were all in use during Paul's time. However, one of the most infamous temples was dedicated to Aphrodite, the goddess of love (whose worshipers practiced religious prostitution). This fact, coupled with it being a large commercial city, fostered prostitution in the name of religion. The immorality of Corinth became so widely known that the Greek verb "to Corinthianize" came to mean "to practice sexual immorality."
